Presenting Bad News in Different Culture

Brief Explanation


This blog tell us about how to present bad news in other culture.


A negative message can by any unkind message that can cause the reader to emotionally react against the writer. A negative message can put the reader in a hostile position where the reader will feel disappointed and begin to dislike the writer. Therefore, negative message require much more care before presenting them to the general public, as they can damage the relationship between a writer and its reader.                   




Culture use different strategies to examine negative news. There are two strategies that  can be used to examine bad news are:- 
  •  Indirect Strategy     
  • Direct Strategy      

So, there are many cultures that follow this strategy like:-

  • American use indirect strategy and tell their negative news gradually.



  • In other culture such as Germany and Britain they use direct method.
  • Whereas in China, Japan and other Asian culture they use indirect strategy and avoid negativism.

There are many instances which tell when to use the Direct or Indirect strategy:-

  When to practice the Direct Approach:-


  1. When the bad news is perfectly safe and does not hurt anyone’s feelings.
  2. Once the reader has overlooked the bad news.
  3. When a person or a organization prefers straightforwardness.
  4. When allowing control is necessary. 




When to practice the Indirect Approach:-

  1.    If the bad news turns out to be disappointing.
  2.    If bad news is a threat to the customer relationship.
  3.    If the bad news summons a unfriendly reaction.
  4.    If the news becomes unexpected.
